Download as iCal file

Thursday, February 09, 2017, 12:00pm - 02:00pm

Registration is encouraged, as this workshop has a capacity of 10. Explore the simple and elegant New Mexico colcha stitch and learn the provenance of the designs. A presentation will be followed by a colcha stitching workshop. Participants will learn how to embroider the New Mexico colcha stitch using various textile backgrounds and yarn. By the end of the workshop, participants should know how to prepare and stitch their own colcha embroidery project. Material and yarn will be furnished. The attendants should bring a paper pad, pen and pencil, embroidery hoop no larger than seven inches, a ruler, small scissors and a sense of humor. Monique Durham was born and raised in France. From an early age, embroidery and fiber arts were parts of Monique's life. She learned to embroider from her Spanish and French aunts while spending her summer and holidays in her ancestral home in the Pyrénées, a stone’s throw from the Spanish provinces of Aragón and Navarra. Her interest in New Mexico Colcha Embroidery begun 1991 when she attended a colcha workshop at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology in Albuquerque. She recognized the stitch and style she learned from her aunts. She has been stitching and researching the folk embroidery of New Mexico ever since. Her colcha has received awards for embroidery at the Wool Festival of Taos and the Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta, as well as other textile events.
