A video presentation by David Foster Wallace, moderated by Joe Neri.
David Foster Wallace was a professor and writer and is most known for the commencement speech he delivered to the graduating class of Kenyon College in Ohio in 2005. “This Is Water” is considered one of the most significant speeches of its kind and is a trove of practical wisdom for living in the real world.
Wallace discusses the “unsexy” but very real challenges of day-to-day living, describing the unconscious, default settings that we all use to cope in mainstream society. The purpose of education, he asserts, is not to learn how to think but to learn how to choose what to think about.
Joe Neri will lead a discussion of the concepts in this riveting and thought-provoking hybrid video.
David Foster Wallace was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and professor of English and creative writing. Wallace is most widely known for his 1996 novel “Infinite Jest,” which Time Magazine cited as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005. His posthumous novel, “The Pale King” was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2012.
Wallace grew up in Illinois and attended Amherst College. He taught English at Emerson College, Illinois State University, and Pomona College. In 2008, he died by suicide at age 46 after struggling with depression for many years.
Joe Neri has been a resident of Silver City and a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City since 2018. Among other things, he is a student of “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz, as well as “The Five Levels of Attachment” by Don Miguel Ruiz, Jr.
Neri is also a musician. He bought his first guitar in Greenwich village in 1962 and has been a musician of the times ever since. In addition to performing solo around town, Neri also fronts his blues and classic rock band, Blues Dawg, and is also the musical director for UUFSC's Silver City Slickers. You can also catch him every Wednesday morning on "The Blues Show," his weekly radio show on Gila Mimbres Community Radio, KURU 89.1 FM right here in Silver City.
