PUBLIC SAFETY NOTIFICATION

SILVER CITY, NM, Feb. 21, 2025 – The Silver City Ranger District is preparing to implement a prescribed fire within the 251-acre Mulberry 1 project area, in early to mid-March pending resource availability and appropriate weather and fuels conditions. Located 2 miles southwest of Oak Grove subdivision and 2 miles west of Burro Mountain Homestead, this project will reduce hazardous fuels in proximity to these two wildland urban interface communities.

"The purpose of this prescribed fire is to reduce slash leftover from recent thinning projects that were focused on improving mule deer habitat. This project is part of a forest and watershed restoration effort in partnership with Grant County Soil and Water Conservation District," said Silver City District Ranger Elizabeth Toney. "Reducing wildland fuels will assist firefighters to respond more safely and effectively to future natural ignitions in this area."

The prescribed fire unit is located in the Burro Mountains south of Red Rock Road (Grant County Road 4-24) along the west side of Forest Ridge Road (Grant County Road 4-6) and along the east side of the Continental Divide Trail. Hikers on the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail will be diverted from the trail onto Forest Ridge Road between the Red Rock Trailhead and the Forest Ridge Trailhead. Road guards will be in place in the vicinity of the prescribed fire. For more information, contact Maribeth Pecotte at (575) 388-8201 or This email address is being protected from spambots.
