The award-winning documentary, A Decent Home, will be shown at the Silco Theater in Downtown Silver City, Wednesday, August 14th at 6:00pm.

A Decent Home addresses urgent issues of class and economic (im)mobility through the lives of affordable homeowners living in land-lease communities who can't afford housing anywhere else. They are fighting for their dreams — and their lives — as private equity firms and wealthy investors buy up communities, making sky-high returns on their investments while squeezing every last penny out of the (im)mobile homeowners who must pay rent for the land they live on.

Unfolding across the distinctly American landscape of (im)mobile home parks, A DECENT HOME focuses on the residents of Denver Meadows in Colorado, who are trying to save their low-income community from being shut down by an owner who wants to re-zone the land and sell it for millions.

The film examines urgent issues of inequity and affordable housing — the growing flaws of a faltering system — through the stories of the residents of Denver Meadows as well as homeowners in other communities across the country.

This film is relevant today as homeowners in New Mexico communities are facing extreme rent hikes, reduced services, loss of their homes and largest investment due to predatory practices and inadequate legislative protections.

Director, Sara Terry, a Sundance Documentary Fellow, spent nearly seven years making this film examining a national crisis at the community level. She has been widely interviewed about the stories of people in Colorado and other states, by NPR and others. Some of her footage was used on the John Oliver show focusing on (im)mobile homes.

The film will be followed by a community conversation about affordable housing; how to preserve it, create it, and defend it in ways that benefit individuals, the community, and the planet.
