James McAteer, senior associate provost who chaired the search committee, added: "His leadership in TPAL during a time of change was noted by many, and we now look forward to seeing Dr. Marlatt excel in his new role."

Marlatt received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of California, Riverside and a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His most recent work appears in English Education, Research in the Teaching of English, English Journal, English Teaching: Practice & Critique, Journal of Education, Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, and Action in Teacher Education.
