Antonio "Tony" Lopez Ortiz, 59, a beloved figure and legend of Bayard, NM, sadly left our world on July 26, 2024. He was born on April 26, 1965 to his parents, Cruz Angel and Raquel (Gutierrez) Ortiz in Silver City, NM.

Tony enjoyed his cups of coffee and regularly had coffee dates with his neighbors. Tony was the ultimate lover of Coca-Cola, coffee, trucks, baseball caps, sunglasses, radios, and batteries. He enjoyed family picnics, as long as he didn't have to get in the water and was so fond of his bicycle. Tony often blessed family gatherings with his latest singing rendition, his beautiful green eyes filled with tears, of Vicente Fernandez and some of his other favorite artists. When asked what time it was, he always responded with the same answer,"ocho". He was a loving uncle and loved his babies, he enjoyed teasing his nieces and nephews calling them "feo" or "peo" in his terms. You could often find him cruising Orchard Street donning the latest Ray Bans, Oakleys (or any sunglasses that his family left behind at his home), wearing his baseball cap with his Walkman in clutch, and his muddied-tire trucks trailing behind him. Tony was recognized everywhere he went. As a nonverbal man, he built friendships solely through charisma and kindness. On many outings he was greeted with "Hey Tony!" leaving his family puzzled as to how he knew them. Tony was a beacon of light, joy, and kindness, and a reminder of "Different, Not Less". He will be greatly missed by his family and community.

He is survived by his brother, Sam Ortiz (Sandra) of Alamogordo, NM; his sisters, Estella Salas (Javier) of Bayard, NM, Sylvia Candelaria (Antonio) of Bayard, NM, Rose Jimenez (Manuel) of Bayard, NM, Rachel Lozano (Hector) of Safford, AZ; his brother in-law, Robert Terrazas; his numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Cruz Ortiz; his sisters, Olga Soto and Susie Terrazas.
