Rita Salgado, 59, a resident of Bayard, NM, entered eternal rest Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at Las Palmas Medical Center, in El Paso, Texas. She was born on May 6, 1963 to her parents, Baldomero and Consuelo (Sanchez) Esqueda in Silver City, New Mexico. She attended college and worked as a medical secretary for Presbyterian Hospital.
Rita was a compassionate spirit whose passion was caring for others. She was known for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for her family. Despite her large family Rita always made time for everyone. She always provided support and love for her friends and family. Rita was a passionate crocheter. We will miss her greatly. Rita was one of the strongest, bravest, and kindest women to ever walk this earth and our family was blessed to have her and we will never be able to fill the space left behind by her.

On April 29 Mark went to be with his Heavenly Father and re-unite with his son Jason. Mark was an amazing person who always loved whole heartedly. He always had a smile and knew how to make you laugh. Mark had the biggest heart and would make everyone feel loved, he was always there when someone needed a smile, a hug, or a laugh. Mark loved his family, and had been enjoying spending time with his grandkids. Everyone has fond memories of him listening to his Metallica music. He loved to cook and was ready to feed everyone who came over, his red chili was the best! Mark worked at GRMC as an environmental specialist, where he had made many friends.
He is survived by his parents Tommy (Catherine) and Rita Gomez; his children…Alyssa, Eric, Ryan Gomez (Yasmine), and Mariyah Gomez (Francisco); his sisters Melanie (David) and Priscilla Gomez; stepsister Jasmine, Aujanae and step brother Justin; grandchildren Antonio, Joseph, Abigale Grijalva, Avianna and Xzavian Aguilera and Mateo Gomez; his nieces and nephews, Davinity Gomez, Ezekiel Reese, Ailani Reese, Xoemi Reese, Brandon(Aliyah) Reese, Cory Reese, Felicia Reese and Baby Freya.

Martha Stuart
Martha Stuart passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023 in Las Cruces, New Mexico at the age of 81. Martha lived in Silver City for many years. She was a beloved friend to many and had been very active in the community in earlier years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. Marty, as her friends often called her, had several successful careers over her lifetime—buyer for a department store, accountant, banking. While living in Texas, she trained and showed horses in competitions. She served for several years on the Gila Regional Medical Center's Foundation Board and helped with their annual golf tournament. She was an avid reader and loved to hike and take long walks. For several years she was a faithful member of Strong Women Strong Bones until Covid disbanded it and proudly proclaimed that it kept her active and strong. Martha will be greatly missed.

Penelope "Penny" Alice (Morton) Schulke, 84, a resident of Silver City, NM

Penelope "Penny" Alice (Morton) Schulke passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City, one month short of 85 years old.
Penny was born in Bismarck, ND on June 2, 1938 to Victor and Verda Schmaltz. Penny had one sister (Vicki) and two half brothers (Rodney and James Morton).
In 1956, Penny’s family moved to Aurelia, Iowa where she finished her secondary education and attended Buena Vista University, receiving her teaching certificate. In 1958, Penny and Douglas Schulke were married and Penny taught school to help her husband through Veterinary School. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Todd, Tracey (died in infancy), and Bradd.
Penny and her family moved to Ida Grove, Iowa in 1966 and lived there until 1999 when they retired and moved to Mimbres, NM. She enjoyed 25 years of retirement.
Julia A. Peralta, 95, a resident of Reserve, NM

Julia A. Peralta passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 24, 2023.
She arrived ninety-five years ago to her parents, Luis and Maria N. Armijo. She led a strong and fulfilled life. She was the only one in her family of eight to graduate high school; a fact of which she was proud. She was born and raised in Reserve. All of her family loved her and will miss her terribly. The family wants to thank Cousin Eddie Romero for calling her every day to check on her. We also want to thank all who called, visited with her, and made her life easier to keep her home.
She will reunite with all her siblings in Heaven, along with her husband, Robert; her dearest and oldest son, Mike; her granddaughter, Lourin and her great-granddaughter Alex.
She is survived by three sons, Sam, Ralph and Robert Jr. Peralta and one daughter, Connie Jones; numerous grandkids and nieces and nephews. She will be missed.

Bobbie Sue Shurtz-Gossett, 62, of Silver City passed away at her home on Friday, March 24, 2023.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Baca’s Funeral Chapels.
Bobbie was born on December 20, 1960 to Robert K. and Audrey Lee (Van Gilder) Shurtz.
She was the mother of two sons, Nickolas J. Shurtz born January 11, 1985 and George N. Gossett born August 14, 1986. Bobbie attended Western New Mexico University where she received an Associate of Science Degree in Drafting and Design. She was an avid computer technician, having built over 30 computers during the course of her career. From 1995 to 2008, Bobbie applied her skills within the mining industry, doing survey work and carrying out various responsibilities with the Cobre, Chino, and Stillwater Mining companies. She will be remembered by those who loved her as a warm-hearted soul who went out of her way to help those in need.
