Please join us Tuesday April 2 as we welcome Amy Barela as our guest speaker.
Amy has served as the Congressional District 2 Vice Chair from 2019-2023.
We appreciate her guidance and answers to all of our questions through the years.
She has also been the Chairwoman of the Republican Party of Otero County for many years.
This is her 2nd year of serving our state as the party 1st Vice Chair.
The eighteen plus year old Western Institute for Lifelong Learning(WILL) "Lunch and Learn" program continues on Wednesday, April 3, when Allyson Siwik, Executive Director of the Gila Resources Information Program (GRIP), will speak on the subject "Building Climate Resistant Communities in Southwest New Mexico."
Allyson will discuss the adverse effects of climate change, including hotter, drier conditions leading to extreme fire risk, with attendant poor air quality issues, reduced stream flow and extreme precipitation events. She will also cover the actions GRIP has taken to address these issues, working in partnership with a variety of local organizations.
SILVER CITY, NM, March 26, 2024 – The Gila National Forest is the traditional gathering place for local communities observing holidays all year long. As we approach Easter weekend, please recreate responsibly and care for this special place.
Cascarones (confetti-filled eggs) are a fun part of the Easter tradition. However, confetti does not belong in the forest. Confetti, made of thousands of tiny bits of paper, plastic, or metallic material, is notoriously difficult to clean up. In an outdoor setting, it catches on the wind and scatters in an instant. Ultimately, it is washed into streams, rivers, and the ocean, and animals have been known to eat it. In order to protect the Gila National Forest, its wildlife, and downstream resources, we respectfully ask you to leave the confetti at home.
For everything else you bring with you, please remember to do your part and pack it out. For more information contact Maribeth Pecotte at 575-388-8211 orÂ
Silver City, NM, March 25, 2024—Laruni Witty will be the guest speaker at the April 2nd PFLAG meeting, 6:00 PM, at the Unitarian Universlist Fellowship, 3845 N. Swan. The public is invited, and light refreshments will be served.
Witty supervises the wellness room at La Plata Middle School. He is currently pursuing a masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Sociology from Western New Mexico University.
Witty states, "I got connected with the Silver Schools as an intern. The district administrators proactively reached out to WNMU to identify potential candidates who could contribute meaningfully to this initiative. Through this partnership, I seized the opportunity to apply my knowledge and skills in a real-world setting, aligning with my passion for supporting students. I was honored to be selected by a committee of district administrators and staff to spearhead the wellness room initiative at La Plata Middle School.
