The use of artificial intelligence in education has been a hot-button topic as of late. Research on the use of AI and ties to racial bias has led to the founding of a new research collaborative based at New Mexico State University's College of Health, Education and Social Transformation involving faculty at NMSU, the University of Texas at El Paso and other universities in the region to explore bias in the educational uses of generative AI.
One example of generative AI is the popular ChatGPT, which allows users to create text, visual and audio content using data it is trained on. Melissa Warr, assistant professor in the School of Teacher Preparation, Administration and Leadership, is leading a research study exploring racial bias in ChatGPT, and the implications for the use of tools like Chat GPT in education.

PORTALES, NM – November 1, 2024 – Eastern New Mexico University's Office of Native American Affairs celebrates Native American Heritage Month throughout November with numerous events, speaking engagements, and music programs on campus.
Native American Heritage Month was first known as "American Indian Week" in 1986. President Reagan set aside this week to celebrate Native American Heritage. However, in 1995, November became Native American Heritage Month, which honors the history, individuality, and respect of Native American people and tribes.
With New Mexico State University on track to become an R1-designated research institution in 2025, the university is also well ahead of its research expenditure goal.
Preliminary numbers collected for the National Science Foundation's Higher Education Research and Development Survey indicate that in 2024, NMSU has had $141 million in research expenditures, or funds spent to conduct research. The largest increase in expenditures were seen in biological and biomedical sciences.
"Behind this exciting HERD number are talented, hard-working, creativity faculty, students and staff who have overperformed on a key performance indicator in our LEADS 2025 Strategic Plan," said Luis Cifuentes, NMSU vice president of research, creativity and economic development.
