Portales, NM – May 7, 2024 – Eastern New Mexico University welcomes graduates and their families to Greyhound Arena on the Eastern New Mexico University campus on Saturday, May 11 at 10 a.m. to celebrate their academic achievements as part of the one hundred forty-sixth commencement ceremony. Steve Loy, ENMU alumnus and the president of Sportfive Americas, will give the commencement address.
NMSU agricultural field days kick off at Leyendecker research center May 22

New Mexico State University’s Agricultural Experiment Station is kicking off its annual field day season at the Leyendecker Plant Science Research Center May 22.
Attendees will get a chance to learn more about the center’s research, which includes long-term soil health, guayule crops, chile breeding for mechanization, crop rotation and cover crop for suppressing weeds among chile pepper crops, and agrivoltaics to protect chile crops from curly top.

New Mexico State University’s Department of Public Health Sciences honored three individuals for their work in promoting military health, border health and mental health.
The NMSU Public Health Heroes Awards, now in its ninth year, recognize and celebrate local public health heroes for their ongoing contributions and commitments to public health. Humaira Rahman, assistant professor of public health sciences, led this year’s award ceremony, which coincided with National Public Health Week in early April.

“What can St. Genevieve teach Las Cruces?” A group of community members posed that question in a zine titled “A New Zine Atlas of Las Cruces.”
New Mexico State University graduate student Esperanza Chairez Uriarte answers that question through a zine she co-created in collaboration with community members over the course of three public workshops.
Born and raised in Las Cruces and pursuing a master’s degree in the department of geography and environmental studies, the place she calls home has become the focus of much of her work.
KRWG wins New Mexico Press Women awards, advances to national contest

KRWG Public Media, Las Cruces’ public broadcasting for television and radio, earned nearly two dozen awards at the 2024 New Mexico Press Women (NMPW) Conference. KRWG’s eight first-place winners will now compete in the national contest. Awards were given for radio, television, digital and student reporting.
KRWG’s first-place winners Jonny Coker, K.C. Counts, Angelina Malone, Anthony Moreno Noah Raess, Evelyn Sandoval, Christian Valle and Leora Zeitlin will go on to compete nationally. The National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) will announce those winners at their conference in June in St. Louis.

Two New Mexico State University students will exhibit their work at this year’s Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition hosted by NMSU’s Art Museum.
“Making as Knowing · When I was Here, Thinking of There” will run from May 9 to July 20 in Devasthali Hall and features work from MFA candidates Karly Jean Kainz and Blanca Martinez as they explore ideas of home and personal ritual.

Retired NMSU VP appointed interim chancellor of community colleges

New Mexico State University has named retired Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance Andrew J. Burke interim chancellor of the NMSU system’s community colleges in Doña Ana County, Alamogordo and Grants.
Interim NMSU President Mónica F. Torres made the announcement in a memo to campus on Thursday, May 2. Torres, who previously served as chancellor of community colleges, began her tenure as interim president of the NMSU system on May 1.
