The Silver City Art Association in partnership with Light Art Space Gallery present the annual Fearlessly Independent Artist Showcase, November 14 – December 1, 2024 with an opening reception, Friday, November 15th, 5:00 – 7:00pm at Light Art Space Gallery. Work will be juried and prizes awarded the night of the opening.

There will be refreshments, meet the artists, and vote for "Silver's Favorite, " which will be announced at the closing on December 1.

The Silver City Art Association supports members as galleries, studios, and independent artists. Forty-seven independent artists are currently members of the association. A selection of work by the independent artists will be presented in this exhibition.

Saturday, November 16th at 9 am – 12 pm at Grant County Community Foundation parking lot

Fall is the perfect time to put on a comfy sweater, drink a warm beverage, and rake away the litter from our streets! Join Pick It Up–Toss No Mas for our last community cleanup of the year on Saturday, November 16th, 2024. Volunteers meet at the Grant County Community Foundation parking lot from 9 am - noon and spread out to clean roads, waterways, and public spaces around Silver City. Let's clean up our city and commit to leafing no litter behind as we move into the holiday season.

Volunteers should meet at the Grant County Community Foundation parking lot at 1106 North Pope Street, at 9 am on Saturday, October 19th and grab your supplies, including trash bags, gloves, trash pickers, and snacks. Once you've finished collecting litter, return to the parking lot and drop off all trash and recyclables between 11am and noon. We'll have coffee, donuts, and music for volunteers!

Volunteers should bring a water bottle and wear closed-toe shoes, a sun hat, and sunscreen. Children 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Families with younger children are encouraged to clean up litter in their neighborhood, local parks or waterways as children under 12 are not permitted on state highways for the cleanup.

Thank you to the New Mexico Department of Transportation for hauling the collected trash to the landfill. Recyclables will be recycled with Silver City Recycles.

Volunteers are the foundation of the Pick It Up – Toss No Mas program. Since October 2021, over 848 volunteers have picked up over 25,837 pounds of trash, debris, and recyclables from Highways 180 and 90, Silver City neighborhoods, Big Ditch Park and San Vicente Creek.

Thank you to each and every one of our volunteers, organizations, and partners who helped collect a whopping 885 pounds of litter at our August Cleanup! We were incredibly thankful for the amazing turnout and support in our collective effort to keep Silver City clean and beautiful.

Monthly Pick It Up – Toss No Mas clean-up events are held the third Saturday of every month. Community members can also adopt a roadway or waterway to take care of and clean up throughout the year. On top of that, Pick It Up – Toss No Mas can provide guidance for those who would like to put on their own clean up event, helping to supply the trash pickers, trash bags and gloves for your event.

Pick It Up – Toss No Mas community cleanup events are sponsored by the Town of Silver City, New Mexico Clean and Beautiful, Silver City Watershed Keepers, Silver City Recycles, Silver City MainStreet, SWNMACT, Southwest Solid Waste Authority, Silver City-Grant County Chamber of Commerce, and New Mexico Department of Transportation's Toss No Mas Program.

The Silver City Woodcarving Club will meet on Thursday, November 14, from 1-3 pm at the Grant County Extension office. Contact Keller at 575-313-1518 for more information. All interested in woodcarving or learning woodcarving are welcome.

Alice Fujita-Schwartz and Katie Kronemyer with the repaired sweaterThe Southwest Women's Fiber Arts Collective (SWFAC) in collaboration with the Future Forge Makerspace, is offering community members free mending of clothes and teaching how to mend clothes. This free program will be held at the Future Forge located at 307 East College Ave on Saturday, November 16, 2024 from 10 am to 12 noon.

Did you know that 66% of unwanted clothes and textiles wind up in the landfill? Or that less than 15% are recycled and the rest, 19% are burned? Mending Our Ways is a program to help reduce clothing waste by teaching community members how to mend and offering free mending of clothes. On the 16th, community members can bring one item that needs a simple repair like replacing a button or a tear in a shirt or pants.

Traffic Alert – Various Lane Closures Beginning November 11

DEMING - The New Mexico Department of Transportation District One office in cooperation with Mountain States Constructors, Inc. (Contractor) is excited to announce the $18.9M upcoming roadway rehabilitation project including milling and paving operations on Interstate 10 from milepost 64 (Gage) to milepost 75.2 (west of Deming) in Luna County.

Beginning Monday, November 11, 2024, and lasting approximately 145 working days drivers can expect various daytime lane closures on both the eastbound and westbound lanes as needed for milling and paving operations. The contractor's hours of operation will be from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Overnight lanes closures may be in place for the replacement of the guardrail and concrete wall barrier.
