The first jolt of primary season comes a month before the election. State Sen. Siah Correa Hemphill is ending her candidacy for a second term.
"I am not going to be running in the general election," she told me in a phone call. "I will withdraw on June 5, the day after the primary."
She is the only Democratic candidate on the primary ballot in Senate District 28, stretching across the southwestern section of the state.
Correa Hemphill, D-Silver City, said she has employment opportunities as a school psychologist, and she has to pursue them in the interest of financial stability for her family.

New Director of The Commons to Speak at PFLAG Meeting
Silver City, NM, April 30, 2024–
Iris Nolasco, the new executive director of The Commons, will be the guest speaker at the May 7th PFLAG meeting, 6:00 PM, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 3845 N. Swan. The public is invited, and light refreshments will be served.
Ms. Nolasco is a graduate of both Silver High School and Western New Mexico University. She has expertise in Nonprofit Management, Community Development, and Equity and Inclusion initiatives. Her journey with the organization actually began in 2007 when she served as an Americorps Volunteer and staff member at The Volunteer Center, now The Commons, where she played a pivotal role in its formation. She has also worked as the Peace Corps Environmental Conservation Extension Agent in Panama.

On the day of Give Grandly, May 4, 2024, live interviews with representatives of the more than 60 participating organizations will be aired all day by Gila/Mimbres Community Radio (GMCR.org) and KURU 89.1 FM. Throughout the day, live KURU DJs will curate music at the event at Main Street Plaza in Silver City, at Seventh and North Bullard Streets.

The Southwest Regional Museum of Art and Art Center will be participating in Give Grandly this year. We hope everyone will stop by our booth on Saturday May 4 between 9am and 2pm. Fifty free coloring books designed by Board Members will be given away.

The Silver City Friends of the Library (FOL) is holding its May Book Sale on Saturday, May 11, at the FOL Bookstore, 1510 Market Street, from 10:00am-2:00pm.
Hardback and trade paperback books are priced at $1.00 each and paperbacks at $0.50 each. In some cases, books may be priced higher. Weather permitting, clearance item sales take place in the FOL parking lot where visitors can purchase a bag of books (special bags are provided in the parking lot) at $2.00 per bag. There is no limit on the number of bags a visitor can buy.
