SILVER CITY, NM — Western New Mexico University students are offering free tax preparation assistance to seniors and low-income families in the southwest corner of the state.Â
This is the 42nd year WNMU students have run the local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. This free service is for people whose household income is $64,000 or less and for those who are 65 years or older. The volunteers — WNMU business and accounting students— are certified by the IRS and trained to help taxpayers identify tax credits.
The WNMU Francis McCray Gallery of Contemporary Art and the Expressive Arts Department will present the annual Juried Student Art Exhibit February 29 through March 31. The opening reception for the exhibit will begin at 6:00 PM on February 29, with awards announced at 6:30. More information can be found on the university's website.

The Silver City Public Library invites you to join us Thursday, February 22nd for a free concert at the Silco Theater at 3:00pm with folk duo Hungrytown! Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson, through their years of worldwide touring and tireless devotion to many classic genres of music, have crafted Hungrytown into a true artistic hybrid, able to hold Celtic and Americana, ballads and psychedelia, sunshine and darkness, joy and despair–not only within the same album, but within the same song.

Monday is a fee-free day at Catwalk Recreation Area
All Gila National Forest offices will be closed on Monday, February 19 in commemoration of Presidents Day. Offices in Silver City, Mimbres, Glenwood, Truth or Consequences, Reserve, and Quemado will reopen with their normal business hours on Tuesday, February 20.
"On Presidents Day we honor those who have served as American Presidents," said Forest Supervisor Camille Howes. "I hope you'll enjoy some time outdoors on your public lands and take advantage of a fee-free Presidents Day at the Catwalk Recreation Area."
On Tuesday, February 20, 2024, Bart Roselli, Director of the Silver City Museum, will speak to the Rotary club. His topic: "What is Happening in the Silver City Museum."
Roselli's career began more than 30 years ago in a recreated 19th Century village museum in his hometown of Middletown located in the Hudson Valley of New York State.  After studying museum education and management at Bank Street College of Education in New York City and at the Getty Institute of Museum Management in Berkeley, California, he then worked in museums of history, art, natural history, science and even a zoo. He has served on state, regional, and national museum associations and on boards of other community non-profits and business associations. He has served as the president of the Silver City Rotary Club, Secretary for the Grant County Silver City Chamber of Commerce, Executive Committee of the Southwest Word Fiesta, The Silver City Historic District Review Commission, Grant County Give Grandly Coalition and he plays the banjo in the local band, the Big Ditch Crickets. He and his wife, Gail live in an adobe house in Chihuahua Hills in Silver City. Â
