Prescribed fire will reduce post-logging hazardous fuels
RESERVE, NM, February 23, 2024 – The Gila National Forest, Reserve Ranger District is preparing to use prescribed fire to burn about 100 machine-constructed slash piles in the Sign Camp Canyon and Bull Basin Canyon area over the next month.
"These slash piles are by-products of recent logging activities completed by a local, Catron County logger," said Acting Reserve District Ranger Bret Ruff. "Logging in the Gila's ponderosa pine forest is aimed at restoring healthy, more natural forest and watershed conditions, while supporting local economies."
Project continues to reduce wildfire threat in high risk areas near Silver City, New Mexico
SILVER CITY, NM, Feb. 21, 2024 – The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District plans to resume hand thinning in the Little Walnut area at the end of February, and is expected to continue for the next few months. Hand thinning will take place within portions of the 179-acre Unit 6 and the 41-acre Unit 4 that were unable to be treated with heavy equipment.
"We are in our second year of fuels reduction treatments in the Little Walnut area as part of the Bear Creek to Signal Peak Joint Chiefs' project and have made a significant difference in fuels conditions in that area," said Silver City District Ranger Elizabeth Toney. "These areas will need to be treated and re-treated on a recurring basis as understory vegetation naturally re-grows."

Help protect our public land resources for enjoyment by current and future generations
SILVER CITY, NM, February 21, 2024 – The weather is beginning to warm as the sun climbs higher north along the horizon on its annual march toward the spring equinox. With the warming weather, more people are getting out and enjoying all that the Gila National Forest has to offer. Recently, law enforcement officers have observed and received reports of a number of violations related to litter and motorized vehicles.
"Even if you are a frequent public land visitor, it is wise to check the rules and regulations that apply to the area of your planned visit before heading out," said Silver City District Ranger Elizabeth Toney. "These rules exist in order to protect natural resources as well as public health and safety."
