SANTA FE– New Mexico State Treasurer Laura M. Montoya joins federal, state, and local Latino elected officials in sending a letter to President Biden advocating for immigrant communities and recognizing their significant contributions to the U.S. by granting work permits to long-term immigrants.
"Immigrants are long-term contributors to our country that work hard, pay taxes, and add strength to our economy. As the first elected Latina State Treasurer, I will always advocate for our immigrant communities to have the opportunity to live the American Dream," said Treasurer Montoya.
The letter addresses the lack of work permit availability for long-term immigrant communities across the United States, and urges the Biden Administration to establish new work permit programs for the following groups:
Undocumented spouses and immediate family of U.S. citizens. “Dreamers” who, though ineligible for DACA due to age, significantly contribute to the U.S. economy. Long-term workers who have contributed and paid taxes for years but have been denied a path to legal status.

Heinrich, Wyden, Padilla Introduce Legislation to Strengthen America’s Electric Grid, Improve Data and Models for Energy Reliability
WASHINGTON — U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), and Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) introduced two bills to bolster the nation’s power grid by improving data and models to better understand and predict electric reliability.
More granular data is needed to better understand weather impacts on energy resources and demands, especially as extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change increase in frequency. Reliability data is also required at the community level to identify potential disparities and ensure energy equity.

Heinrich Applauds Biden Administration Decisions to Protect Western Arctic Reserve and Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve
WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, is applauding two decisions from the Biden administration to protect globally important wilderness lands in Alaska’s Western Arctic and Brooks Range.
The administration has finalized a new framework for balancing development with the protection of Special Areas within the Western Arctic in Alaska and they have rejected a proposed 211-mile industrial trucking corridor called the “Ambler Road Project” that would have cut directly through Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve and the Kobuk River Valley to allow hardrock mineral development along the southern edge of the Brooks Range.
