As part of the university's accreditation process, representatives from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) will be on the Western New Mexico University campus October 7-9, 2024, to meet with members of the campus community. Several of the sessions on the agenda will be open to the public.
As a "gatekeeper" agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, HLC assures that institutions comply with federal and state requirements, assess student learning, engage in institution-wide planning processes, are financially responsible, and evaluate and improve programming and services through analysis of data. WNMU proudly embraces the guiding values that underlie the five Criteria for Accreditation.
Silver City, NM, September 26, 2024—A representative from the League of Women Voters will speak at the monthly support meeting of PFLAG Silver City on Tuesday, October 1st, 6:00 PM, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 3845 N. Swan. The public is invited, and light refreshments will be served.
According to the Williams Institute of the UCLA School of Law, 5.5% of US adults (13.9 million people), identify as LGBTQ. "That's a considerable bloc of voters," says PFLAG Silver City spokesperson Damie Nelson. "And when you include the family and friends of those LGBTQ Americans, those numbers could sway the outcome of our local, state and national races. In addition, there are all the parents with LGBTQ children. Those kids can't vote yet, but their parents can."
Visitors are advised to wear blaze orange or other brightly colored clothing
SILVER CITY, NM, Sept. 26, 2024 – Hunting season is here! On Saturday, September 28, youth-only deer and elk rifle hunts will begin in the Fort Bayard area within Game Management Unit 24. Trail users are advised to wear blaze orange or other brightly colored clothing to increase your visibility while in the hiking, biking, or horseback riding in the area.
"While hunting occurs throughout the Gila National Forest, the concentration of trails in the Fort Bayard area demands an extra measure of caution," said Silver City District Ranger Elizabeth Toney. "We recommend wearing bright colors to help ensure everyone stays safe when out and about this hunting season."

Gila National Forest prepares for fall burning
SILVER CITY, NM, September 25, 2024 – The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District is preparing to implement the Redstone prescribed fire project as soon as October 1 or the week that follows. The exact date of ignition will depend on weather and fuels conditions as well as firefighter resource availability.
"Prescribed fire is an important tool for reducing hazardous fuels that threaten communities. Promoting low to moderate intensity fire on these lands today will help reduce future fire impacts," said Silver City District Ranger Elizabeth Toney. "These activities are coordinated with the State of New Mexico and comply with air quality standards set by the state's Air Quality Bureau."

Kimmi Bitter – Full Band
Retro Country Singer Songwriter
Doors: 7:00pm • $15/advance
Centered around the vein of old-school country with a touch of the swinging sixties, Kimmi Bitter and the Westside Twang are here to transport you on a retro journey into the year 1962 through their nostalgic songs. "The future of classic country is Kimmi Bitter," as Saving Country Music boldly states. Effortlessly navigating through Countrypolitan ballads in her mod wardrobe and love of white boots, Bitter has drawn strong comparisons to Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, and Nancy Sinatra.
