Silver City Ranger District preparing to implement Redstone Prescribed Fire
SILVER CITY, NM, September 25, 2024 – The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District is preparing to implement the Redstone prescribed fire project as soon as October 1 or the week that follows. The exact date of ignition will depend on weather and fuels conditions as well as firefighter resource availability.
"Prescribed fire is an important tool for reducing hazardous fuels that threaten communities. Promoting low to moderate intensity fire on these lands today will help reduce future fire impacts," said Silver City District Ranger Elizabeth Toney. "These activities are coordinated with the State of New Mexico and comply with air quality standards set by the state's Air Quality Bureau."

Her distinguished career spans three distinct phases, each influenced by the unique places she has called home. Lois has been an influential artist in Silver City for over two decades.

Christina Castillo, director of SPIN, Supporting People In Need, will speak to the Silver City Rotary on October 8. Supportive Housing is an evidence-based practice which uses Housing First, Trauma-informed design and services, and Harm Reduction models. In addition to the permanent supportive housing, and supportive services, SPIN also provides transitional housing and 24 hour a day emergency shelter and peer-run drop-in center.
A warm, dry fall is pushing fire danger to High – please be careful with campfires!
SILVER CITY, NM, Sept. 30, 2024 – It's been a hot, dry fall on the Gila National Forest and the seasonal outlook is predicting a dryer than normal fall and winter, increasing local fire danger to "High". Although precipitation from January through August met or exceeded the 30-year average at most sites, little rain graced the forest last month, and total moisture over the past three months has been lower than average. Temperatures have been considerably hotter than normal, and relative humidity has been lower than normal.
